In this panel discussion, we hear an incredible patient story about Jamie Manning and his wife, Karen Manning.
In March 2014, Jamie was a victim of a horrific car accident. As a result, Jamie suffered catastrophic injuries and extreme burns to 40% of his body.
Evidently, Jamie and Karen reflect on their journey to recovery and their experience with the hospital system. Jamie’s recovery process was a long one and involved multiple clinicians and multiple procedures.
Moreover, we hear from the healthcare professionals who were involved with Jamie’s recovery. This is a gripping story and a true example of open and honest communication between patient and clinician.
Furthermore, in this discussion the team reflect on learnings for the future. Such as, what went wrong, what went right? What could have been done better? Notably one of these learnings includes the importance of continuity of care.

Sarah Webb
Sarah Webb is the Resuscitation Clinical Nurse Consultant at Royal North Shore Hospital. In ten years of experience in Intensive Care she has also worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, ICU Clinical Coordinator, ICU Educator and has been involved in the establishment of several high fidelity ICU simulation courses. As the Resuscitation CNC she has been developing the resuscitation education, systems and processes within the new RNSH campus whilst working within a team to implement an intensivist led, multidisciplinary rapid response team. She is currently completing a Nurse Practitioner Masters program and has a particular interest in crisis resource management and advanced clinical practice in nursing.
Kristy Washington
Kristy is a senior social worker in the ICU at RNSH. Kristy has had the privilege of working with the dynamic team at RNSH ICU for the last 10 years and more broadly has worked in health for 18 years. Areas of interest include understanding recovery from trauma, supporting people through grief and ensuring kindness and compassion is communicated to all we encounter in the hospital setting.
Karen Manning
Jeon Cha
Dr Cha is a reconstructive surgeon with qualifications from the University of Sydney and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. In addition to gaining qualifications in plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr Cha has also undertaken further sub-speciality training in hand and wrist surgery by completing the Sydney Hand Surgery Fellowship in 2013 (a twelve month role with the Hand Surgery Units at St. Lukes Hospital and Sydney Hospital).
Dr Cha has public hospital appointments at Gosford Hospital (Plastic Surgery Unit), Royal North Shore Hospital (Burns, Plastic & Maxillofacial Reconstructive Surgery Unit) and Sydney Hospital (Hand Surgery Unit) where he is actively engaged in the training of future plastic surgeons. He is currently the Supervisor of Training at Sydney Hospital.
Dr Cha has special interests in hand, reconstructive and microsurgery.

Christine Bowles
Chris Bowles is a Trauma and Emergency Physician at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. She is a lecturer at the University of Sydney, where she is creating a new Unit of Study entitled Trauma Beyond the Resus Room. She has served as clinical director of a major trauma service, has co-chaired the statewide ITIM Education Committee, and spoken at or convened many international meetings- this year navigating the challenges of delivering the Coda Trauma mini-congress in the midst of a pandemic.
When not at work she enjoys running, reading, and hanging out with husband Oli and their three kids + dog.
